CAMBRIA NEWS | WATER & LOCAL GOVERNMENT | OCTOBER 2026 — Cambria, San Luis Obispo County. A long-running legal and regulatory process concerning the Cambria Community Services District’s Water Reclamation Facility advanced in September 2026. The district’s September 14 environmental filing states that the California Coastal Commission denied all appeals and found no substantial issue on September 9, allowing a previously approved Coastal Development Permit to become final and effective.
What the project includes
The water facility was originally authorized under emergency coastal permitting in 2014. The continued-operation proposal encompasses an advanced water-treatment plant, connecting pipes, monitoring wells, recharge-injection wells, discharge infrastructure associated with San Simeon Creek, and the conversion of Van Gordon Reservoir to a brine-evaporation pond. These are components described in the permit record, not new construction milestones that all occurred in September.
Why it matters to Cambria
Cambria’s water supply is sensitive to dry conditions and groundwater management. The project’s stated purposes include protecting groundwater quality, limiting seawater intrusion, protecting creek and lagoon resources, and maintaining water availability for existing residents and commitments. A final coastal permit is important for operations and oversight but does not itself prove specific changes in water yields or costs.
What officials have not yet established here
The September filing does not provide a new opening date, updated utility bills, annual water-production totals or a determination that every permit condition is satisfied. Residents should seek the adopted Coastal Commission findings and the CCSD’s subsequent operating and monitoring reports for those questions.
What we will track
Cambria News will follow public CCSD meetings, groundwater and creek monitoring, any construction or maintenance obligations, and customer costs. Readers can submit verifiable notices or corrections.
